Case #115 – Perinatal Hospital: aid for mums and newborn/premature babies

It took a while but we have done it. Valky is a small city about 60 km from Kharkiv. Despite the fact, that the city is still under Ukrainian control, it has been suffering from Russian attacks for over a month now.

Long-awaited aid on its way to Valky.

It took a while but we have done it. Valky is a small city about 60 km from Kharkiv. Despite the fact, that the city is still under Ukrainian control, it has been suffering from Russian attacks for over a month now.

The maternity hospital in Valky is in great need of humanitarian aid. Every week 20 or more children are born here and medical supplies are simply not enough. Clothes, syringes and basic medicaments are collected from the nearest big cities Kharkiv and Poltava. But since Kharkiv is resisting the invasion itself and Poltava is receiving hundreds of thousands of refugees the decision is only temporary.

Alisa Davydova from the Valky maternity hospital called Sunflower Relief for help. The aid was needed as soon as possible, so Irra Ariella Khi started looking for donors ready to provide necessary supplies.

The hospital needed:

- Newborn and premature nappies

- Baby clothes and blankets

- Disposable baby changing mats

- Baby bottles

- Syringes

- Needles

- Umbilical clamps

- Medical gloves

- Bandages

- Gauze

- Paracetamol

- Antiseptic cream

- Sutures

- Bacoban disinfectant wipes

Gpsupplies.uk had all the necessary items worth £2000. Irina Agafonova, the coordinator of the case, took care of the documents and communication between the donor and Valky hospital.

But the major problem was the logistics. Many supporters are able to bring aid to the Ukraine-Poland border but they cannot go further. This is the bottleneck of every humanitarian mission and this is where Sunflower Relief acts as a mediator.

The delivery to the border was organized with our partner organization We help Ukraine. The Ukrainian volunteer organization Характерник agreed to deliver aid to Valky but the cargo needed to cross the border. Irina Agafonova filed an official request from the Valky hospital for humanitarian help to show up on the border and secure the free passage.

When this was settled, 1.2 tons of aid was loaded into the truck and the driver Ruslan Shelest crossed the English Channel with so much needed help for dozens of little Ukrainians.

This humanitarian mission took enormous efforts and coordinated work from loads of people. But the most important is their willingness to put aside their normal jobs and help those innocents, who were born in the most difficult times.

This case is closed but there are many at work. Support Sunflower Relief in their effort to ease the humanitarian crisis in other parts of Ukraine.
